One emerging technology that has the potential to enhance adult education is incorporating more social media into online classes.  Smartphones have the ability to do so many amazing things and with each new phone comes more possibilities of incorporating them into online classes.  When I got my first phone many years ago, about the only capability was to call anyone at basically any time.  As social media has been added to smartphones, the capabilities to use Facebook, Instigram,  Pinterest, and many new features are at our fingertips.  Our lives have gotten so full that finding time to actually sit down and compose a paper is harder than at any point in the past.  Facebook can be used as a very small blog arena.  Instead of actually having to write a great deal, it could be used as an exit ticket where the students could post what they needed help on as well as what they learned.

Another technology that is emerging is the voice recognition.  IBM (2008) reports, “Speech recognition software converts spoken words to machine-readable input. IBM has developed a program called Reading Companion to exploit speech recognition for helping people learn to read”.  As a special educator for the previous twenty plus years, I believe this would make an incredible difference in the number of students who could have learned to read.  Students could read as they are driving somewhere.  In addition, having books, etc., that read to the student as they are driving, working, etc., could help with learning content.  I know that when I am driving, I can listen to sermons that my pastor has posted or listen to a book that I do not have actual time to read.  Life is so fast-paced that we need all the help we can get!

Mason (2006) states, “Research and development efforts that help adapt emerging technologies for use in adult language and literacy contexts, and then systematically investigate their impact on learning processes and outcomes, will pave the way for the kinds of adult language and literacy education needed in the next decade and beyond” (p. 129
